A summary of the rule is not a citation. The rule is.

Verand reads your articles for claims that need a citation, finds candidates from the authorities your industry answers to, checks every URL resolves, and hands you a worklist. Nothing gets cited until you say so.

Two doors

One article on demand,
or the whole archive.

The per-article button sources the page in front of you. The sitewide pass works through your blog highest-search-value first, in background batches that chain until the site is done or the period's allowance is spent. An article whose content hash has not moved since its last pass comes back from cache and costs nothing. It never runs on a schedule; a sitewide pass happens because you pressed the button.

Back every claim with a source Google trusts

One background pass reads every article, matches each factual claim to a verified authority (the FTC, Google and SEC), and queues them for your review. Never a random blog; articles already done are skipped for free.

The tier gate

A primary source,
or none offered at all.

Every candidate is classified by publisher tier, and the compliance packs resolved for your site decide which bodies count as primary: the body that issues the rule first, recognized industry bodies and major press second, general explainers never. A rule, a code section or an agency term may cite only the issuing body, so an explainer's summary of an IRS rule is dropped rather than offered as a near-enough match. One candidate per publisher, the best five kept per claim.

A professional rule of thumb that no authority publishes is routed to self-attribution, because phrasing it as your own experience is a stronger signal than a weak link, and Verand skips the search entirely rather than hunting a source that does not exist. An objective claim it could not source is reported as exactly that. Neither is quietly filled with the first plausible page.

Expect 7% to 9% cash-on-cash in year one on a stabilized asset.
statistic· rule of thumb
Attribute this to your experience. No authority publishes this as a fact. It's a professional benchmark. Phrasing it as your own (“In our experience…”) is a stronger E-E-A-T signal than a citation. Cite an industry benchmark only if you have a real one.

Checked, then graded

Fetched before it is offered,
and counted in the editor.

Each candidate URL is retrieved before you see it. A 403 from the SEC counts as valid rather than dead, because a server that refuses robots is not a broken page, and throwing those away would discard the best sources on the page. In the editor the Citations card lists each in-text source with the claim it backs, and the Accuracy meter counts a citation only when it resolves, is not on your banned list, and is not a general explainer.

How it works

Four steps, and you approve the last one.

Finding the gap is part of the crawl. Filling it is the half that costs something, so it only ever runs when you ask.

Questions

What people ask before they run it.

What gets flagged, where the sources come from, and what Verand refuses to cite.

How does Verand decide a claim needs a citation?

The test is whether an honest answer to “where did you get that?” is a URL. A specific number, a named rule or code section, an act, a form mechanic, an agency term, a published government series: those get flagged. Orientation, industry vocabulary and opinion do not. Neither does anything you wrote in the first person, because your own track record is already attributed to you. A claim that already has a link beside it is left alone, and at most seven claims are raised per article, densest first.

Where do the candidate sources come from?

One search per claim, then the gate. Domains are classified by tier, and the compliance packs resolved for your site decide which bodies rank as primary, so a medical site hunts its own regulators rather than the SEC. Only one candidate per publisher survives, five at most per claim, and a primary-source-only claim that turns up nothing is searched again restricted to the issuing bodies before Verand concedes. The domains you always prefer and the ones you never want cited are set separately, in Sources and disclaimers.

Does anything change on my live page?

Only when you press a button, one claim at a time. The default is that you copy the URL, add the citation yourself and tick the claim off. Where the site is connected, Apply to live weaves a superscript source link immediately after that exact sentence, through WordPress, a page builder via the Connector, or a commit to a git-hosted repo. If the sentence has changed since the scan it refuses and tells you, rather than guessing at where the citation belongs.

How many articles can I source?

Thirty a billing period on Starter, 75 on Growth, 200 on Professional, 600 on Agency, and no ceiling on Managed. The unit is articles sourced, not runs, and the pool is shared across every site in the organization. A cached article never counts again, so only genuinely new or edited content draws on it. There are no overage charges: you stop at the cap and decide whether to move up.

What happens when there is no good source?

Two different answers, because they are two different problems. A normative benchmark that no institution publishes gets a self-attribution card instead of a citation, since writing it as your own judgment is the stronger signal. An objective claim Verand searched for and could not source is listed as unsourced, for you to source yourself or rephrase. Neither is padded out with a general explainer.

Do the citation checks block me from publishing?

No. Citation density and Source quality both raise warnings on the article, never a block, so a thin bibliography is reported rather than gated. What does hard-block is a missing required disclaimer or a banned claim. The Accuracy meter on the Report Card is the other half of the readout: it counts a citation as approved only when the URL resolves, the host is not on your banned list, and it is not one of the general explainers Verand would refuse to recommend.

Sources backfill

The archive is the part nobody goes back to.

The first crawl runs during onboarding, across every page you have, so the articles making claims with nothing behind them are already listed when it lands.
